The Duneland Coalition Against the Death Penalty will be having its monthly meeting on Monday, September 12th at 6:00 PM at Angela Retreat Center, 412 West 10th Street in Michigan City. Map

As the news stories below attest, the vigil and protest did go on as scheduled yesterday evening, 7-26-05. About 20 abolishionists came by during the evening. The media was there, though in smaller numbers than in the past. It rained hard and continuously till about 10:20 and the wind continued very strong all evening. No candles at this vigil, even though we had various "windproof" lanterns. Even so, "our crowd" enjoyed each other's company - and goodies from Lisa - and we had special access to reporters who moved among our cars, spending time with their interviews that might not have happened on a more clement night. Marti had brought some signs encased in sheet protectors and John had an enormous tin sign. After the weather broke, he, Edwin, and Barbara beat on the drums for awhile. We know that the prisoners heard us and we understand that they take some encouragement from this witness. We stop most of the noise by 11:00PM. We always enjoy meeting with the staff from the Indiana Public Defender's Council, who come up in support of the prisoner's defense attorneys: Kevin's attorneys were two of his six witnesses. It is always poignant to witness the loss that these attorneys feel as they witness the life draining out of a client they have known for years. It's all so surreal and wrong. It seems to us that the media is uniformly sympathetic in their casual conversations with us. We need to continue to write our representatives and the governor to encourage them to have a committee study whether this practice is really keeping Hoosiers safer.

Next vigil is for Art Baird. Come Tuesday, August 30th 8 PM. More info later.
